Institute Library Expedition
New Life as a Max Level ArchmageVivi’s library expedition turns a lesson in spellcasting into a discreet return to the Thaumaturgical Institute, where she hopes to find knowledge for herself and help Saffra continue learning despite her exclusion. The visit combines a practical search for books with a test of how far Vivi will go to accommodate her apprentice: she disguises Saffra, enters under her own credentials, and takes her into an archive that Saffra might otherwise have been unable to explore.
From a lesson to a library visit
The expedition grows out of the day’s leveling session. Saffra has just vaporized the Zone Boss’s loot with a supercharged Scorchlance, destroying a considerable amount of crafting material. She panics and apologizes, but Vivi tells her that the loss does not trouble her: she could replenish the money by clearing higher-rank hunting grounds, and she had deliberately allowed Saffra’s spell to run its course. The moment establishes that the lesson is not being measured by the value of its rewards, and that Vivi has chosen to let her apprentice learn through the spell’s full force.
As their session ends, Vivi gives Saffra her remaining gifts: scrolls for defensive magic of the sixteenth tier and above. Saffra has grown accustomed enough to extraordinary instruction that she gawks for only about a minute before groaning and accepting the scrolls. Vivi then asks her to choose another spell to pursue now that she has mastered Scorchlance. Alongside coaching in spell design and mana exercises, Vivi recognizes that Saffra needs forms of education she cannot provide herself.
The Institute’s library could help fill that gap, but Saffra has reason to avoid returning: she has been banned from the Institute. Vivi initially asks her to recommend books rather than assume she wants to enter. After a pause, Saffra suggests that she could come along instead. Her hesitation gives way to the prospect of seeing the library, especially its upper restricted floors. Vivi agrees, though the choice means bending institutional rules to give her apprentice access.
A concealed return to the Institute
Vivi is willing to take Saffra, but not to advertise what she can do. Rafael has warned her that flaunting her power could frighten people and disrupt the world’s social structures, with potentially cascading consequences. To avoid attracting notice, Vivi warps them first to a safe place inside her manor, hoping its privacy wards will mask the spell’s signature from anyone watching in Meridian. Blink itself is powerful enough to draw attention, so she keeps Nysari’s identity as a possible fallback.
Before they travel on, Vivi covers Saffra with carefully obscured illusions, the same kind she uses to hide her tear-trail tattoos and the designs on her robes. The disguise is intended to leave no obvious trace of Saffra’s identity unless a dragon directly casts detection magic on her. Vivi knows that disguises are not infallible: Archmage Aeris recognized her despite concealed tattoos, because he had worked closely with The Sorceress. At the library, Saffra reacts with surprise to the idea that Vivi has several personas, underscoring that this visit involves more than simply walking through the Institute’s doors.
The collection and Vivi’s research
An elevator brings them to the first floor, where a vast arched entrance opens onto one of the world’s premier collections. The library spans the Institute’s full diameter, with shelves along its circular walls and across the ground floor. Vivi estimates that it holds millions of books. Enchantment-powered white orbs hang through the space, casting dim light over the shelves, while the air carries the smell of paper and vellum. Although a century has passed, the library has changed less than Vivi expected; she pauses at the entrance to take in the scale of a place built to display the Institute’s academic ambition.
The collection also provokes a technical question. If a book can be located by its title, Vivi reasons, the library must use an unusually sophisticated enchantment. She begins imagining how she might build semi-intelligent helpers able to find a volume among so many tomes, and suspects that the system links them through a master enchantment array rather than giving each golem its own complex magic. Saffra’s question about what Vivi came to find pulls her from that line of thought.
Vivi wants general reference material: history, politics, and geography, with additional interest in dimensional magic and related theory. She also wants basic primers because, despite receiving common-sense information from Saffra and Rafael, she sees gaps in her own knowledge. Rather than borrow books, she intends to make copies for later reading. The pair gather a small selection of the general works she thinks she may need, and Vivi copies and stores them.
Restricted shelves and an abrupt end
Vivi and Saffra then climb a long spiral staircase toward the restricted floors. Vivi offers to use Invisibility if Saffra’s ban prevents her from entering, though she is not entirely certain the spell would escape detection. In the event, no subterfuge is needed on the first restricted level. The librarian does not object to Saffra accompanying Vivi, whose credentials and decision to name her as an apprentice apparently suffice. Access there is limited to Institute Magi and important, well-connected guests, but the level does not contain the collection’s most powerful tomes.
The contrast with the expansive main floor is immediate: the restricted shelves are smaller and fewer, arranged more like those of an ordinary library. Saffra searches them with far more interest than Vivi, who finds the experience worthwhile but is disappointed by the quality of the spell designs. Even instructional material reserved for full Institute members seems crude by her standards. Its information is not wrong or dangerous, but she doubts whether such primitive manuals would be good instruction for Saffra; having them is still preferable to having nothing.
Vivi’s appraisal reaches a concrete example in a journal describing an inferior implementation of the seventh-tier spell Earthrend. As she examines it, the relaxed exploration ends: Saffra rushes around a corner with a panicked expression. The expedition’s account stops at that interruption, leaving its cause and consequence unresolved, but the visit has already secured copied reference books and given Saffra access to shelves from which she had been excluded.
